It depends upon the policy of the club, and the customs and climate of the area.
Where I live in South Beach, 'casually elegant' is always correct (although some clubs will reject you for wearing shorts or denims, and during big holidays like Winter Party, Art Basel, etc., they might insist on dressier outfits).
In New York, Paris, London, Montreal, Toronto, and Chicago, an elegant black shirt, designer pants, well-accessorized with belt, nice watch, simple but tasteful rings and neck chokers/chains is expected -- black is always in fashion there.
Amsterdam, Key West, Ibiza, Madrid, Prague and Rome have a less formal idea of what's going to get you into a club, maybe because of their warm summers. But women can wear shorts in places where men can't, so be warned. Also, some will throw you out of line for being too extreme, too naked, etc.
I always take a sporty dress jacket, even with jeans, and it gets us in. But checking your coats can be expensive, tedious long lines, and annoying. I sometimes wear a sweater then pretend to be 'French' by tying it around my waist or shoulders while dancing. It's better than freezing on taxi hops between clubs!
Resort clubs like the Bahamas, Jamaica, Puerto Rico's Condado District, Virgin Islands, Mexico, and other places frequented (at least not often) by the party 'circuit crowd', but more by 'amateur clubbers' which includes Spring Breakers and Honeymooners, Cruise Retirees-- all these tend to be more forgiving.
Places like Cancun and Daytona Beach don't seem to care what you wear. Las Vegas clubs vary from very formal to less strict, but in the end, they will admit you if slip the doorman a $50. (used to be $20).
L.A. has something for everyone, but there are papers called 'bar rags' in California and every other big city worldwide -- free glossy magazines available are youth hang-outs, clubs and hotels, which sometimes list the entrance requirements. Lonely Planet books are good, too. Most big clubs now have web sites.
I know Straight girls and macho guys who always go to gay clubs, because they are cleaner, safer, less fussy about outfits, and have the BEST DANCE MUSIC AVAILABLE!!!
You can ask the hotel concierge, or tour operator for local customs and rules. Don't get cheeky or smart with doormen or bouncers -- they can be rude and violent and they are paid to be nasty in some places. Smile and have discreet cash in hand, that was my rule back in my nightclub days.
They never last for long, so enjoy them while they last!

Thats a hard question to answer. A lot of clubs have dress codes so check it out before going. Also, it depends on your own personal style of dress. Last of all, are you going to hang out with friends or to impress people?
Generally speaking, wear something that you feel comfortable in.

Frankly the look is black pants and a buttoned down shirt you'd think is too wild for work. complement it with black leather shoes.
people go for the leather jacket look which is always cool, but can get hot in the club.
