Apart from the people in the answer above, who do you think clean up all the rubbish after all the New Year partying around the city, the streets, the beaches and the parks? And then, who take the party-goers home? Bus drivers, taxi drivers, train drivers!

Is New Years considered a Holiday if places of business are open? What make New Years a Holiday and not just a day of Celebration. I worked retail and I had to work! So what's the deal with New Years...Holiday or Celebration?

Not at all.
All those people running the retail stores, restaurants, fast food places, public utilities, and thousands of other industries just show up that day out of the the Love of serving others.
For everyone who gets off New Years' (and goes out shopping or to eat) guarantees that someone else will Not be allowed to enjoy a quiet holiday at home.

Yup, there are many 24/7 "essential work" folks out there. They get the priviledge of working Christmas, Thanksgiving and every other holiday there is.
