Thomson, Sir Joseph John (1856-1940), British physicist and Nobel laureate. Thomson was born near Manchester, Lancashire, and educated at Owens College (now part of the University of Manchester) and Trinity College, University of Cambridge. At Cambridge he taught mathematics and physics, served as Cavendish Professor of Experimental Physics, and was (1918-1940) Master of Trinity College. He was also president of the Royal Society (1915-1920) and Professor of Natural Philosophy at the Royal Institution of Great Britain (1905-1918).
Thomson was awarded the 1906 Nobel Prize for Physics for his work on the conduction of electricity through gases. He is considered the discoverer of the electron through his experiments on the stream of particles (electrons) that make up cathode rays. A theorist as well as an experimenter, Thomson advanced in 1898 the “plum-pudding” theory of atomic structure, holding that electrons were like negative “plums” embedded in a “pudding” of positive matter. Thomson was knighted in 1908.

Sir J.J Thompson discovered an electron by conducting an experiment using a cathode ray tube (CRT).
He measured e/m of the particles emitted by the plates of CRT and found out that irrespective of the material used as plate of CRT, the charge by mass ratio always remained the same.
Therefore he concluded that these particles are the fundamental particles of matter and called them electrons.
note: now it would be inappropriate to call electrons as particles due to its dual nature to act both as particle and wave (quantum mechanics).

J J Thompson used a CRT to determine the charge to mass ratio of an electron.
however, G J Stoney was the first to propose that electricity was made of tiny negatively charged particles called electrons.

It was J.J Thomson who discovered it and gave its e/m ratio but its amount of charge was given by Robert A. Milikan.its charge is -1.602 * 10^-19 C which is taken to be 1 unit
