Most people know that Bond is sometimes known as “Commander” Bond; this is a rank in the British Royal Navy and marks the final link between Bond, Fleming and the Submariner. Fleming was a naval officer before entering the intelligence service during WW 11, as was his hero, James Bond and in 1959 the Submariner also joined the Royal Navy. Unlike Fleming and Bond the Submariner did not join naval intelligence rather it was recruited for an even more hazardous branch, the “frogmen” or diver’s department.

James Bond is a Commander in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.
He does also have a knighthood - CMG - but the C stands for "Companion" and not "Commander".

"Commander" is a rank which is above :"Liutenant Commander" and below "Commodore". It is a Navy rank and is the same level as an Army "Liutenant Colonel". He doesnt work for MI five, (security service) he works for MI six, or the SIS, Secret Intelligence Service.

Neither His Commander status is with MI5 which is a special police force attached to the British Government Offices
