Rock is way better than (c)rap. Rap is just computer generated noise. That's why you can have any and every moron off the street be a rapper. Rock is real, true emotions, and talent. They write their own songs, play their own instruments, make whatever kind of music they want. Rappers only make music that they think people want to hear, and they end up sounding exactly the same. Rock musicians don't use each others guitar riffs, lyrics or other sound. If rappers had to make up their own sound and not copy each others music and rhymes. Rap wouldn't exist. Rap takes no talent whatsoever, they just put on clothes 3 times their size, put some jewelry on, drive so called pimped out rides, make up their own words (because they're to stupid to read, or understand english), and every monkey out there wants to buy their album. Opinions Please.

Rock is not better than rap, it's DIFFERENT to rap. Comparing rap to rock is like comparing apples and oranges. There's nothing about themes, production, focal points of the genres that they share.

Furthermore, you can't say that rap has no "true emotions". Clearly, you don't listen, and that's fair enough, but you can't make a statement like that without having something to go by. It's the same as saying that all country songs are about a guy who loses his house his car and his woman and is moaning about it. You sound very ignorant for making blanket statements like that - especially about a whole genre.

And you want to talk about true musicians and non musician? The Roots play their own instruments, Lincoln Park doesn't - so what's up with that?

Granted, rap has gotten more and more commercial/formulaic with time, but so has rock. C'mon, you can't tell me that the evolution within the genre has meant a lower quality of music being put on the air at rock stations. Even amongst the same artists. Look at Green Day for instance. a decade ago, they were original - now they're emulating I don't know what. Their newer stuff is SOOO much more commercialized than even their very commercial third album (Dookie).

And if you don't hear similarities in rock music amongst artists, you must be tone deaf or something. Okay, so not as common as with rap, but you hear similar drum beats, guitar sounds, and bass in rock often too.

In my opinion rap is better cause i can relate to the words, understand what they talking about and I grew up with it. I understand you not liking rap, but that dont give you a reason to start slamming it, when i hear rock i hear a depressed white boy screaming, but you dont hear me slamming rock just cause i dont understand it. Slamming something you dont understand is ignorance and everybody knows ignorance caused racisim and wars. What makes it worse is alot of people come and support the ignorance being given out by you and other rap haters.

every genre has its own definition of aesthetics. to judge a musical genre via the aesthetics of another one is both stupid and short sighted. in rock, of course you have a specific definition of what sounds fresh, brand new, and creative because usually rock music is targeted to a different segment of the population. in rap, the aesthetics are waaay different. what sounds fresh and creative in rap is an entirely different animal than what is considered creative in rock music. i concede that rap music is highly formulaic mainly due to the use of sampling but in my opinion that in itself is rap's most appealing aspect given that they take elements from other songs and make an entirely different thing. i believe that takes great creativity. but not only does rap sample but there are various artists in this genre who do indeed play instruments, for example; the roots play instruments and create their music to accompany their lyrics. in terms of emotions, again that lies in the target audience. a rap song can very well affect a person emotionally just as much as a rock song can or a country song or a reggae song. i consider myself a huge fan of rap music but i also find music from the beatles, eric clapton, and various other artists in the rock genre deeply moving. "eleanor rigby" from the beatles can move me just as much as "dear mama" by tupac. as to rappers supposedly creating only music that the public wants to hear and creating an image that appeals to the same public, i contend that commercialism is rampant in various genres not only in rap music. rock has its commerical aspects, as does country music and a variety of other musical genres popular in the U.S. and the western world. but, just like rock has its softer side speaking on relevant things besides materialism, so does rap music. i refer you to rappers such as Talib Kweli, Mos Def, and Common. These artists speak on relevant issues such as love, spirituality, and life. i believe that just like John Lennon made music that has meaning, artists who write music that speaks to the soul and ignores the shallow materialistic side that we all have are those that people like us naturally gravitate towards. it really doesn't matter what genre they are. at any rate, i believe that the crux of your argument lies in your ill-fated attempt in stating a clear cut definition for art, music, and creativity. given the inherent ethnoaesthetic issues within this topic, there is no way to clearly define those things, and in that, your argument is a self-defeating one. still, i commend you for starting off a very important discussion on the nature of music and the creativity of music in the market today.
