I agree with Maddy3legs.

I would also add that mental privacy would depend on a lot of other factors. If I read the mind of someone who speaks a different language would I understand their thoughts? How clear would the reception be? Would it take a lot of effort? How many minds could you read at one time? Would really intelligent people have more privacy, because they can think things other people just don't understand? Would infants be able to understand their parents thoughts? Would you be able to mask your thoughts?

A pseudo-scientific answer would be, if privacy increases your ability to reproduce then evolution would favour it. Otherwise, no.

Depends on whether the mind reading goes through walls. If it does not, then yes a whole lot of people would be staying enclosed just so no one intrudes on their mind privacy. If it does, then no, there would be no mental privacy. I don't think some people would even dare to think but then the indecent ones might have a field day.

That would depend on whether we all chose to use the power all the time. Just because we can do something doesn't mean we have to. We're all capable of committing a criminal act, for example, but the majority of us choose not to.

It's akin to reading someone's diary. Out of respect for another's privacy, I wouldn't do it.

No..... So we are placed in separate "jars"....... so that we dont leak into each other and become a different "flavor".......

When our "jar" is open, and the contents revealed..... will we be spoiled?......... Hopefully not like the "jar" behind us.......

*** Might I also add, that only in the subconscious are things truely open..... people experience a truth they can't comprehend, and so its language is hard to understand...... But, if understood, we actually can know the nature of everyone around us......It's the only place where no lie can be told... even to ones self......

you know how people are always saying they do or did something without thinking? ... now if that's really possible, then it would mean at some point there are no thoughts available to be read ... that might still mean privacy ;-)

fun question though ....

I suppose you might have privacy only on the subconscious level, which would mean that there are some things you'd never want to know about yourself, just to keep them private.
(What you're describing sounds really awful!)

Not at all. But that would also compromise healthy competition and innovation. Those who are lazy thinkers would be parasites on others' ideas - just because they knew what's on their minds. And surely life will be a bore!!!

Unless we find a way to hide our thoughts then there is no way privacy would ever exist.
