it is sucking air, probably because the vent pipe has been clogged up by some animal, or bird falling in it.

the "stink pipe",vent pipe may have broken below the roof line causing you to hear the air rushing in more loudly.you may want to check in your attic for any odors.the stink pipe is a pvc pipe that allows air to be sucked in when you flush and a vaccuum is created.it also directs the odor to the outside.good luck

maybe it's clogged up with too much toilet paper or you made too big of a poo for it to handle...try plunging the toilet.
if worse comes to worse, i'd call a plumber (but i'm assuming that you don't, since it's in the DIY section...)
