My heavens, you gonna really jump-start your battery? I don't know... sounds risky to me.

You didn't mention which PowerBook you have. That's an important bit of info. Before you try to do odd things to your battery, try resetting the power management unit, following the link below.

Also, check the serial number of your battery and see if it is part of the range shown in the second link page listed below.

Your battery is possibly soggy and needs refurbishing.
Try this to see if it resolves the problem:
Remove the battery, locate the metal strips on the battery.
Get a car battery charger and apply the + _ve termonals to the outside strips and hold in place for about 2 mins. Then reiunsert it into the laptop and turn it on while its plugged to the poiwer/\. The charge indicator should now detect the battery and commence charge. This is quite common with some battery packs in laptops. The sesnor diode loses it !

My PB G4 couldn't run off the adapter and it wouldn't charge my battery at one time. It was the DC-In Board that failed, others with the same problem said that it was their Logic Board at Apple's Discussion forum. If you have the original disks then run Apple Hardware Test. If it reports something then bring it to an Apple Genius Bar or to an authorized repair service center for repair.

If your powerbook does not operate with the battery removed then you have a problem with your powerbook, probably in the charging circuitry. I'd take it to an apple store and have them look at it to confirm this. Mac ResQ does powerbook repairs so check them out when pricing your repair.
