The four functions of a sentence are declarative (a statement), interrogative (a question), imperative (a command) and an exclamation.
Varying sentences come from using simple sentences, compound sentences, complex sentences and compound-complex sentences. I think that the complex sentence is the most interesting to read.
Fragments are avoided best by checking that the elements of a sentence are present.

1) A sentence is a grammatical unit that is syntactically independent and has a subject that is expressed or understood and a predicate that contains a finite verb.
2) conjunctions combine sentences." And" and "because" are examples of conjunctions. They connect words or phrases, and or sentences.
I'll answer some more later. You could also look this up in your dictionary or on google.
