I received the following insight in my email today:

WHAT HAPPENS TODAY COULD IMPACT THE REST OF THE YEAR. HERE ARE A FEW NEW YEAR’S SUPERSTITIONS:

When you wake up, toss your right shoe into the air. If it lands on the sole, it means you’ll get married this year.

Eating black-eyed peas will bring you luck; eating cabbage will bring you money. And don’t pay the bills, or you’ll be paying them out all year.

Make lots of noise at midnight to ward off evil spirits.

Good luck will be ensured for the year by draining the last bottle of alcohol in the house (assuming you didn’t do that last night).

***
Do you know any (or DO any) New Year Superstitions?
(gonna toss my shoe in the air after i sleep and get up)

I was brought up with these been forced upon me by my Italian grandma who was totally superstitious, but don't hold with them;
Never wash clothes on new years day or you will wash away a member of the family,
never hang clothes out on new years day or the family will split,
never shake a doormat outside on new years day or many sailors will lose their life's,
always drink a glass of water first before anything on new years morning and you feel cleansed and pure all year through,
always put a few coins in a purse outside on new years day but bring them back in by midnight for you to have money luck all year through,
never row with anyone on new years day or you will row or year long and finally never cry on new years day or you will cry all year long.
If I had taken everything my gran told me to heart I wouldn't have dared get out of bed each day, old wives tales and superstitions are just that, tales, happy new year and all the best.

Cooking "hoppin' john" -- Black eyed peas w/ salt pork (for luck)
Cooking corned beef w/ cabbage -- (money)
banging pots and pans outside the front door(I don't know about evil spirits, but it sure pisses off the neighbors, heh heh!!)
kiss the women and the babies at midnight, if possible
sweep the porches before midnight (probably also related to evil spirits) -- being careful not to sweep dirt or dust onto anybody's shoes/feet -- bad mojo, supposed to indicate they'll die within the year
drink a shot of scotch in the front threshold at midnight -- be sure to pour out a taste for the dead, as well as those still in the old country (Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales, etc.)
Of these all, I cooked the cb and cabbage; kissed my wife and babies, drank the shot in the threshold, etc.
My people are from Scotland, by way of Arkansas and we hold to LOTS of superstitions...even now that I've moved up north.

My Gran burned her Christmas tree every New Year's day to burn away all the bad luck of the past year.
Luckily she did remove the tree from her cottage first.
The other one, whatever you do on New Year's day will repeat itself thoughout the coming year. So that's why I always try to do things that are fun to me!
About the blackeye pea thing. One year my aunt had the entire family eat a share. That was the year everyone was sick, at one time or the other utilities were cut off, and other things not lucky happened. They never ate the peas in her house again.

Don't fret about the superstitions. Get on with the business of living.
Remember the 'lucky' rabbits paw. The original owner had 4 and he's dead.

Nah- there'll all crap, love.

Put a sixpence in heel of yon right shoe- 't will bring ye luck.
Pay all thine bills and vow not get in arears.
Sour cabbage fumes shall cause ye tears
And a mandrake under ye pillow for a good, hard f***!
