i towel dry my hair after washing or rinsing it.
then put a crap load of gel, or use a scrunching spray (aussie sprunch extra hold).
then you scrunch it to your head. while it dries.
soemtimes i put it in clips and it comes out well, other times not so much.
you can also use hair rollers, put a light amount of styling product into damp hair. rap around rollers. probably do this at night and sleep with rollers.
pin curls are easiest for short hair: http://www.hairboutique.com/tips/tip6412.htm
use hot rollers
if you're only using it with out a curler because curlers don't work. look into buying a SPIRAL curler. i do not know why. but they work on everyone even if a normal curling iron does not. may require spray, depending on how well your hair holds curls.

there aint really a good method. if you're born with straight hair make the best out of it cause all chemical products would damage your hair more trust me. perm? well works but not permanently. curler? dry hair. blow dryer? frizzy hair & split ends. so yea be natural i think you can look good with anything on you as long as it's real

Well you can wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner and then when you are done washing it you just have to brush it and then put some gel on your hair when is wet and start holding up and down until the curls are done!
