The English Language has gone through lots of variations -- and has taken words from many languages. In the case of these four words, they all come from different Middle English words that were originally pronounced differently from one another. As the pronunciation changes, the spelling changed slightly -- but the vowels did not.

Word -- comes from Old English through Old German "Wort"
Bird -- comes from Old English "Bridd"
Herd -- comes from Old English through Old German "Herta"
