I have a debate with a friend. Question. Who is the college national champion now 1/1/07. My friend says Texas, I say nobody is. It will be determened on 1/8/06 when Florida meets Ohio State. who is correct? My point being that Texas was last football seasons national championship team. His point is Texas is national champion until this years game is played.

The answer is this, the Texas Longhorns were the 2005 National Champions and are currently the champs until tomorrow's game, when the 2006 National Champions are crowned. The title is for the past season, not the current season, hence the year designation. You friend should realize that we are currently in the middle of the 2006 season and have yet to decide this year's champ. Texas won last year, they don't reign like Miss America or something... Plus, who have Texas been owned by this year? Not exactly living proof that they are national champs anymore...

Until a new Champion is crowned, the defending National Champions, in this case would be Texas, is still the Champions.

I agree that it is no one. Look Texas isn't in the Title game, and it has already been decided. They will always be the 2006 BCS Champion BUT they aren't defending. Just like the Steelers aren't the defending Superbowl Champions since they lost to Baltimore 2 weeks ago and were out of the Playoffs.
