Run CPU-Z (Just google it, you will find it as your first hit). Open the program and click on the tab at the top with information about RAM. This will show what kind of RAM is installed in which slot. IF you have a slop open (no RAM installed in that slot), then just purchase 512 Mb of RAM with the EXACT SAME specifications that CPU-Z shows. The manufacturer is not that important, but make sure it is the same speed, same physical size (aka, how many pins does it have), etc. If you are not sure what kind of RAM you need, Kingston has a cool utility on their site where it tells you what kind of RAM you need based on the model of the computer. Then open up your computer, plug in the RAM into its slot (Don't worry, it only goes in one way, don't forget about the little clips on the side of the connector), and turn the computer back on. IF you DO NOT have a free slot available, then figure out what combination of memory you should put in the slots to acheive what you want. You could put a 1 gig stick in one slot, and leave the others empty for further expansion, you could use two 512 sticks (possibly faster configuaration) or you could mix and match. Just make sure the speed of the RAM and physical size are the same as what is already in the computer. Good luck.

I suggest that you do these steps:

#
Click Start, then click Help and Support , then click My HP Computer. Complete information on the hardware and software configuration is displayed.
Memory
Maximum capacity 2.00 GB
Installed memory 512.00 MB
Memory Slot 1 256.00 MB
Memory Slot 2 256.00 MB

*
If your Notebook is operating with Win 98, Win 2000, or ME, click Start, and enter msconfig32.exe in the run field to determine your current memory configuration.
*
If a Microsoft Windows Help page is displayed instead of an HP Help & Support page, your Notebook is not configured correctly. Please download and install the HP Help & Support utility from the Drivers and Downloads link.

I strongly suggest that you get the other 512 MB if you have the extra slot, so as to divide the power consumption and process to both modules than having one huge mem. module.

I'll give you compaq manuals for your convenience so as not to confuse you with other details. I hope you wouldn't find this rude, but this is, as what we, techies call an RTMF (read the fooking manual) issue.

if you open your computer up and see 2 slots for ram then buy another 512 of the same type of ram but if you open it up and see 1 slot then buy a 1 gig of the same type. if you do see 2 slots it is better to buy another 512 cause you get a faster speed then just having a 1gb stick.

Maybe the other slot is off to the side...If theres none then you probably need to get a 1 GB ram stick...
