I am wondering which baseball team has the largest fan base, area wise. Not numbers really. My friend thinks its the yankees bc people all over the US wear thier hats, shirts. etc. I think it is the cardinals bc they have fans in arkansas, tennessee, kentucky, southern illinois, and basicly most of the states surrounding missouri bc a lot of those states don't have teams. We might both be wrong. Does anyone know?

I guess I wasnt very clear with my question. (sorry) I know the yankees have the biggest fan base number wise. I was talking about area, like which team has the most fans from a broad region. I guess i mean which teams fans would cover more land. lol

Yes. I know this information will surprise and possibly shock many of the people who have given their opinions above, but: The information was a little hard to find, but here it is: If you mean what team has the largest fan base "area wise" in terms of GEOGRAPHY, (NOT POPULATION), the answer might surprise you. The largest fan base area-wise in terms of square miles is.......the Arizona Diamondbacks !

Major League Baseball (the MLB) divides up the country for purposes of team marketing according to geography, not population or media markets. The other teams are supposed to keep to their own geographic area in terms of advertising and marketing their team. (but that is hard to do with teams like the Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs, who are carrried on TV cable Superstations like WTBS in Atlanta and WGN Chicago. And the Yankees and Red Sox have televisions contracts that penetrate into other cities in the East Coast. .

Here is the info from a website:

"Some teams, such as the Arizona Diamondbacks, have used a regional approach from the start. Since the Diamondbacks joined the league in 1998, they've had the league's largest marketing area, which includes their home state and parts of New Mexico, Utah, Nevada and El Paso, Texas.

Best wishes,

John B.

It's probably the Yankees. If not, it's the Cubs. I say that even though I'm a White Sox fan and hate the Cubs. The Yankees have a huge advantage, just because they're from NYC and they have a storied history. The Cubs have a big advantage because they are broadcast nationwide on WGN SuperStation and are the "loveable losers". The Cubs can play in Atlanta, Arizona, etc., and they'll have more fans at those stadiums than the home teams!

Regardless, it's definitely not the Cardinals. They do have a lage following in the central/rural midwest, and they're a popular baseball team, maybe top 5, but definitely not more popular than the Yankees or Cubs. Even though the Cubs suck!! (as I'm sure you'll agree, if you're a Cardinals fan).

It depends on you meaning of largest. The Yankee's while the most widely known team has to share their city with the Mets. And while there are nowhere near as many Mets fans that cuts out about one quarter of NYC. The Braves have a huge fan base due to the fact there are no professional teams in the Carolinas, Mississippi, Alabama etc. And the Braves play most every game on TBS or some other cable network, which allows more people to see their games. However with both teams they have been successful for many years in a row now. There are a ton of "fans" who have jumped on their bandwagons in the last ten years or so. But for every one of those people there are people who hate the Yankees and Braves because they have been succesful and they feel the media has crammed those teams down the publics throat. The Cards do have a large fan base, but the populations of the surrounding states isn't as large as the populations of states on the east coast.

People that wear Yankees hats and shirts are not necessarily Yankee fans. The Yankees logo is very popular inside and outside the US.

As for having the biggest fan base, yes it is the Yankees overall.

But there are a lot of other teams with huge fans bases as well.
The teams that have been around the longest like the Cubs, Red Sox, Cardinals, Dodgers, Reds and Giants.

The Cardinals have pretty good fans, but the Yankees are in a bigger metro area. Different things determine the quality of the fans:

1. Geographical area: bigger cities will probably have more fans
2. Attendance: Some stadiums (such as Busch) are almost always sold out)
3. Knowledge of the fans: Fanbase is about the fans themselves, not just the amount of fans.

Area wise, as in the most states cheering for one team, it has to be St. Louis. They are a historical franchise located nowhere near any other old teams. Closest to them would probably be the Twins, who have fans covering the northern states of the U.S. from Minnesota and Iowa through Montana. In terms of sheer numbers, it is the Yankees by far, although they also are the most reviled.

Red Sox. Most of New England supports the Red Sox as their baseball team! Plus the Red Sox have a very large fan base in Florida. Soon most of Japan will be watching the Sox too!

I would say the yankees. Most people want to be fans of a winner. So they have loyal fans and you can count all the ones that jump on a bandwagon as well. They sell the most merchandise also.

Even though I'm not a fan of 'em, I'd have to say the Yankees. They have fans everywhere I have lived or traveled. For instance, in Texas when they come to Arlington they not only fill the stadium to capacity, but 25,000 of them are Yankee fans.
