Check out a book titled "Vampires, Death and Burial" (sorry, don't remember the author) it was suggested/supplemental reading for a Sociology class I took a few years ago. Kind of dry reading, but it was very informative, compare/contrast of various cultures' vampire myths, etc. As I recall, the jist was that the various cultures were similar, but varied widely as to the source/cause of vampirism within said cultures. Also made the tie between Romany (Gypsy) culture and the spread of vampire folklore throughout central/eastern Europe.
Hope this helps you out...

everything (or most of) all the things i learned about Vampires came from the books (Twilgiht and New Moon - Stephenie Meyer). i learned that Vampires are cold as ice, solid as marbles...beautiful,quick,graceful,smart, immortal (duh) and that they can live on animal blood instead of human blood. when they drink animal blood, their eyes go a beautiful golden hazel color, and when they are drinking human blood, they turn a deep red ruby shade. their only enemy is the werewolf. and umm, the Volturi. they were/are the most powerful vampire family. around for 3,000 years and they kind of "enforce" the law of the vampire. (not to be found out about). AND...some vampires have extra special gifts (besides the things mentioned earlier, they also have great hearing, eyesight, smell, strength ect...)
thats all i really know. lol...but its from a book.
i also heard (not from those books) that vampires could also be mutated diabetics who didnt keep their blood right.
something to watch, Queen of the Damned, Interview With the Vampire, Dracula (movies of that sort)
