The golden rule of dining etiquette

"The Fork is ALWAYS in the left hand."

I too am left handed but luckily I have never faced this problem.Maybe because even when I use the knif what I do is use the knife to hold down the meat and carve it out with the fork itself. My husband has commented on this else I wouldn't even have known that I do it.

See, there is no problem in holding fork and knife in any hand. Hold fork and knife the way you are comfortable. But, for dining out purposes you should feel and look comfortable while using fork and knife.
In India, mostly people do it the way you do.
The Americans do it oppositely. There is no problem at all.

Moral of the discussion: No problem in holding the fork and knife the either way. Don't worry.

the tradition was started by one inadvertently discriminatory old man. He couldn't think that there were left-handed ppl like you. If this practice was legislated, it would have long been up for review. But you have the right to use whichever hand makes you comfortable. Today's dinners are somewhat not curious, and those who are so are civilized to know your rationale in you having to put a knife in your left hand. Good luck!

I myself are left handed i know what you mean, i have been to some big functions & have had to swap the cultery for each course over & had to move wine glasses so it feels comfortable! you just do what ever feels right for you, at least you use a knife & fork!!

American: pin it down with the left hand and cut with the right, switch the fork to the right hand to feed yourself.

European: pin it down with the left hand and cut with the right, keep the fork in your left hand to feed yourself.

My advice: it's better to feed yourself in the best way you know how rather than showering those around you with food.

It may even be a conversation starter, and who knows where that could lead. Unless you're trying to break into a social class that includes royalty, don't sweat it. Have a happy new year!

I should have been left-handed, but the nuns "taught" me
otherwise. I play a guitar "backwards" and crochet the same.
My sister is left-handed and my son as well. I have always said to do what feels natural.

When my son was four, he could throw a frisbee with such skill it amazed everyone. One day at a family gathering, his uncle, then third year running as the Captain of the soccer team at Currie College, MA, yelled at my son to come and pick up the frisbee as he had thrown it left-handed, even though it came right to him....he had refused to catch it. Infuriated, I yelled back, "Hey,
Scott, you pick it up and throw it back lefty and see how well you
do!!" Everyone was now watching and he was on the defense.
Needless to say, he apologized. Never apologize, try to make execuses for or change who you are and what you are capable of doing.

Whatever way you use fork and knife, the end thing should be that food should go into your mouth. Don't care about people sitting around.

Of course not...its no blunder. You should do what makes you feel comfortable. Its better that way instead of struggling through the meal and not enjoy it!

Go girl!

Most people really aren't sticklers on the technicalities any longer. I'd say do whatever is most comfortable for you. The more comfortable you look and feel, the more natural you'll appear.

Do what feels comfortable to you. If I'm in a restaurant, I will eat a nice and fork but In my home, no knives needed unless your eating something very tuff or pancakes.
