Considering you made one in your opening question, yes I would say they are common. It's not difficult to become a good grammarian, you simply have to know the rules of grammar in order to follow them. However, the only time grammar must be strictly adhered to is when you are doing some form of technical or formal writing (essays, stories etc...). When speaking, the grammar you use will depend entirely upon the pidgeons and colloquialisms of your region. What is considered proper grammar where I am from may not be where you are from. Learn the rules and you'll have it made. And remember, it is okay to use a preposition at the end of a sentence. The only reason that rule is in place is because Alexander Pope wrote the rules of grammar based upon the Latin rules of grammar. Latin rules dictate that you can not end a sentence with a preposition, the Latin language simply does not allow for it. It is impossible to do. So, Pope applied that to English, and voila - English speakers have a rule about no prepositions. And if anyone hassles you about it, you can tell them that a Linguist told you it was true!
(Btw, the mistake in the question...should be Are grammar mistakes very common? or Is making a mistake in grammar very common? Is/Are should agree with mistake/mistakes.) Happy New Year!

You need to study English grammar to improve your skills. There is no easy way to do this.
We do not teach grammar in grammar school the way we used to teach grammar, so mistakes are everywhere and far more common then they were forty years ago.
For example, you will find grammar mistakes on the front page of the New York Times newspaper (one of the most important newspapers in the country) almost everyday because they no longer have a grammarian check their work. They do not even check just the front page above the fold.

It's pretty common when people are careless or thoughtless about words and ideas and communicating in general. When their only focus is getting their needs met or their point across, grammar may not matter at all. As well, the need and desire for good grammar varies--it's one thing for a senator and something else for a pro wrestler
One way to improve your grammar is to read, read, read, read. You will pick up on grammar, syntax, punctuation, etc. It will make you more literate--in reading, writiing, and in speaking overall. You will become more aware of grammar and punctuation and how it is misused in other readings, speaking to various people face to face, in the things that they write to you, etc.
The local newspaper is a very good place to start, but also include good novels by classic authors then try reading comic books and see if you understand how they are written for a different audience who generally doesn't care about language--except for communicating quickly, briefly, forcefully. As well, the writers must write very succinctly to fit the most basic, most important ideas onto each page filled otherwise with action figures.

Yes, many people make grammar mistakes, especially if English is their second language. This is because the same rules do not apply in their own first language. It takes time to improve your grammar. It takes the help of someone (like the folks here at Answers) who can answer the many questions you will have. It also takes determination, but once you do improve, the reward is worth it.

Yes. I've seen a lot here at Yahoo! Answers. And I feel a bit sad for them especially knowing that some of them are Americans. English is just my second language (I'm a Filipino) but at least I know how to speak English in a grammatically correct manner.

Lots of people make grammer mistakes, but it doesn't make it any less ANNOYING! I would suggest working on the problem. Pay attention to what you say.
People look at you as a person with higher intelligence if you can speak properly. Good grammatical skills will definately get you further in life.
