If you take I-17 the whole way, yes, its about 2 hrs 15 minutes. BUT if you want a more scenic route, go through Sedona which takes SR 89 out of Flagstaff and then joins up with SR 179 in Sedona. Adds about 1/2 hr but well worth it.

Far enough to be 30 degrees cooler during the day & 5883 Feet higher during the night.(~and day~).
so at about 145 miles way from Phoenix-
That's about a -2- degree drop in temperature and a +41+ FT rise in altitude- every 10 miles North you drive.!

you can use www.mapquest.com to get the accurate mileage and directions...Just use the starting and destination feature where you enter phoenix, az and the other (destination) flagstaff, az.

You can find cheap homes in Queen Creek or The City of Maricopa which is just south of the Valley. I'm sorry, but I don't think you'd be able to afford to live in the Phoenix metro. and I'm sorry to hear about your mom passing. I'm sure you'll be able to make friends in no time. :)
