The Gibson Les Paul and SG are similar in sound.....some say the Les Paul has a "fuller" sound because of the larger, heavier body. A Fender Stratocaster is a much different sound......I think it comes down to the sound you are looking for and what guitar feels better to you.
Prices for Standard Stratocasters range from about $370 for a made in Mexico model, up to $1000 for a USA made version. There are also many other versions of the stratocaster above $1000.
Gibson Les Pauls start around $900 and go over $2500. SG's range from around $600 up to $1300.
The prices show you the cheapest you'll get one for....there are many, many variations of each guitar that can go beyound these prices.

Gibson SG-$800
Gibson Les Paul-$1250
Fender Stratocaster-around $800
Gibson Les Paul because it sounds good. I have the SG and the Les Paul but I ran out of money before I bought a Fender.

I prefer the Les Paul over both the SG and the Strat, and here is why: I don't like the SG simply because it's "neck heavy". If you have the guitar on your body, and you take both hands off the guitar, the neck will fall towards the ground. I prefer the Les Paul over the Strat because the Les Paul has a much warmer, fuller sound than the Strat. Strat's come with single coil pickups, which have a very thin, brittle tone. Some guitarists perfer that tone, but I don't. Hope this helps you.

I own a Gibson Sg,,a Univox LesPaul & others but am looking for a Fender,,lol. You really have to play them ,, all guitars have different sounds.Altho a really good guitarist can make any sound the same ;O). I can tell you tho that a Fender has a rounded "baseball" neck where as the others have a flat neck feel. Prices vary.

A Gibson Les Paul. Its the most versatile guitar in the world. You can go from blues to country and heavy metal, and only have to change an FX pedal.

I would prefer a Gibson Les paul because Jimmy Page, [the god of rock and the founder of metal] used it :]
