George Brett was the best hitting 3rd baseman, and Brooks Robinson was the best defensive 3rd baseman. The second person in both of those categories was Mike Schmidt, which is why any time that I'm asked that questions, Schmidt is my answer.

1. Michael Jack Schmidt
2. Brooks Robinson - Greatest Defensive 3rd baseman of all time
3. Difficult - Do you consider A-Rod's numbers purely from his time at 3rd base? or do you also throw in his shortstop numbers? If you do count all of his numbers when talking of the greatest 3rd baseman, you have to consider Alex Rodriguez 3rd. If not, I would take Eddie Matthews. Matthews is a vastly underrated 3rd baseman who hit 500 home runs and formed one half of one of the most formidable slugging duos in history alongside Hank Aaron.

Best defensive 3rd basemen of all-time was Brooks Robinson. Best overall 3rd baseman of all-time was George Brett. He's my pick as the best ever.

Mike Schmidt of the Philadelphia Phillies. He was a great fielder as well as hitting 548 home runs in his career. He played a huge role in the Phillies 1980 World Series Championship.

Mike Schmidt- Philadelphia Phillies 3B who was the slickest fielding fielder of all-time.
Defensively think Scott Rolen only much better
He still stands 12th all-time in homeruns with 548 even with all these juiced up idiots passing him (Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, and Palmiero)

By the time A-Rod retires...we'll probably compare the two but right now Mike Schmidt by a landslide

Brooks Robinson was the greatest fielder and I believe A-Rod will become the best hitter at the position.
