15% usually. Less if it's terrible service. More if it's excellent.

You should always tip atleast 18% if your server was good. If they were great then over 20%. Always tip after the tax is added (the server is taxed on their tips, this is their paycheck they dont get anything else in most states)or still tip on the total bill even if something was taken off. The server still served it to you and you still ate it, therefore it didnt just disapear into thin air. This is customary and when you do not go by this it is considered rude and you are considered cheap (when your server, served you well) I usually tip over 20%. I feel it is rude to leave less then 5 dollars no matter what the bill is even if it is $10. If the bill is 50 bucks - $15, If the bill is $100 dollars -$25-$30. If you dont have the money to tip then you dont have the money to eat out, including takeout/delivery. I tip alot b/c i have worked in the service industry and understand that there are more variables then just the server.
and for those of you that say that tipping is considered rude when you are overseas: in most european countries the grat. is already added on to the bill.(so they are tipping)
and please do realize that the tip you are tipping the server does not all go to them.. they usually tip each hostess, bussers, expo, and sometimes more people.. so about 15% of what they made is going to someone else.

Normally you tip from 15 to 20 percent depending on the
quality of the service.

It varies by country. In the U.S., the custom is 15% for standard service, 20% or more for exceptional service. For parties of 6 or more, most restaurants include an 18% gratuity in the check to protect the server from being stiffed, and you should be careful not to double tip.
In Venezuela, the service charge is included in the bill, and most people leave the small change as an additional tip.
In Japan, people generally do not leave any tip at all.
So it depends on where you are and the circumstances.

OK to Bad service - 10-15%
Good to Excellent - 15 - 25%
I always first figure out 20% then adjust the tip according to the service. (ie if the bill is $40. Twenty percent is $8. Of the service was ok I'll give less if it was great I might give more.)

15% is no longer considered "generous." The accepted minimum is 20% in most metro areas. Better service deserves even more. Higher-end upscale places require higher tipping as well.
20% is easy to figure out - take 10% of the bill and double it. (If the bill is $113, the tip is 11 + 11, or 22 bucks. That's for normal decent service.)

In some cases, tips are automatically added to the bill for large groups or in foriegn countrys. I tip 15 percent if no tip is added to bill for good service. My 15 percent is based on total before taxes. If service is great, increase accordingly, if service is bad, leave a minimal tip so you are not mistaken as forgetting a tip. I have been known to leave a penny as a tip. Tip with cash, not on credit card.

I tip between 15-20%. But it varies depending on service and how much change I get back. It's easier to round up or down for the service.
(I hated those middle-aged bank ladies at lunch who would leave about 37 cents on a $7 lunch. My service was at least worth a buck a person for running my butt off refilling their Diet Cokes.)

i have been a server.. trust me we go out of our way on most occassions to make the guest happy.. sometimes it just can't happen.. but standard tip is usually 15-18% anything above 18% is exceptional.. and for the person who tips 30-35% please tell me where u eat so i can get a job there.. but if i'm going out to eat usually it's 20% if it's good service and more if it's great service.. less if it's just mediocer service.. for example there is a restuarant here that my friend and i will go to eat and end up sitting around for a couple of hours just talking (as long as we aren't taking up seats for other guests) and we usually tip on a $20 check like $8 just cuz we sat around and they kept our coffee cups full.. but usually anything between 15-20% is great

the minimum you should tip is 15%. If you get poor service, you should call the manager. Some places share tips and it would be of an inservice to the other bartenders and waitstaff to undertip. If someone goes out of their way, I tip a little extra, up to 25%, and I also call over the manager. I have found that if you call someone out for outstanding service, they can get an award, or a bonus. If they waitstaff is cute and flirty, I will also give a little extra *wink*!

I have to agree with Myk833. Before you decide to leave a bad tip for bad service look around and see what is going on in the restaurant. I've been a server and there is nothing more aggravating than the customer blaming you for something that is out of your control.
