Not all fairy tales have a happy ending. The modern ones do...I always thought it was because of the fact that "fairy tales" became part of childrens literature, and children need a happy ending. The originals, like the Grimms Brothers were dark, violent and very, very unhappy.

Not all do. In years gone by, fairy tales were written for adults and had a mix of dark and happy endings. It's only over the last fifty years or so, that fairy tales have been adapted for kids and been given saccharine-sweet endings because adults assume that's what kids want to see.

because it is one of the requirements for it to be called a "fairy tale" within the literary canon. There are "fairy tales" that do not end with a happy ending, but they are not truly considered fairy tales. It's just one of the specifics of the genre. Just like in a horror story-you need to be scared, or there needs to be something solved in order for it to be a mystery-fairy tales require happy endings.

no body would be interested in them if it would have ended tragically. the main point of fairy tale that even if everything turns completely wrong and messed up someone would find a way and put everything right again... that's just the appeal of the thing.. we like to read them because we like the idea of happily ever after and true love and good always wins...

They are morality tales-if you lead a good life, good things will happen to you. The wicked get punished and the good get rewarded.
