i had my nipples pierced a year ago.
i dont have any kids and i am not pregnant, but when the time comes, will i be able to breast feed?
will the milk come out properly?
i know i would have to take my rings out for hygiene and safety reasons, so will the holes close up in time.
i have heard that some women who had their nipples pierced can often let too much milk out of their nipple because there are more holes in it and that the baby might choke on all the milk... is this true?

Hi Kick!
Breast Feeding
The facts are that in most cases, pierced nipples do not cause a problem when breastfeeding; in fact, some have found that it actually increases their milk flow (flow, not production), making it easier to nurse. Some nursing mothers say they even keep the jewelry in (including during feedings), although I personally do not recommend this. You need to carefully consider what goes into your child's mouth at all times, and a piercing can be a breeding ground for bacteria. It's much easier to keep it clean without the jewelry in place.
If you remove the jewelry permanently while you are nursing, the hole may very well close up and then you would need to repierce your nipple when you are ready. If you remove the jewelry only for feeding sessions, it shouldn't be a problem replacing it after the feeding is over. But constant removal and replacement of the jewelry can be annoying or even cause the piercing to become sore. Since breastfeeding can already cause sore nipples, you really won't want to cause any additional aggravation.
The decision is ultimately yours. You have to decide whether you want the piercing enough now, even if you may lose it later. Once you have a child, you will also have to decide if you are going to keep the jewelry in or remove it. Whatever decisions you make, it should be in the best interest of any future or present child. Nurturing your child through breastfeeding is one of the most important things you can do during the beginning of their life. Making sure that everything that enters their mouths and bodies during that time is clean and safe is also your responsibility.
So, unless you have a medical reason, getting your nipples pierced now and breastfeeding somewhere down the line should cause no complications. However, if you are currently pregnant or nursing, you will not be able to get any piercings until 6 weeks after the baby has been weaned.

Everyone is different in life that's why there are different jobs, different cars, different drinks, and why people have different likes and dislikes. I find Smoking, Alcohol, Skoda's and Arrogance disgusting, just like some people find piercings. What a boring world this would be if we were all robots and had the same likes and dislikes.
THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION.... is yes you can breast feed if you have a pierced nipple. I'm 32 weeks pregnant with my 2nd daughter and I had my nipple pierced for a year before being pregnant this time. The midwife advised that I take the piercing out 2 weeks before my due date and this would be plenty of time for it to heal. I did take my ring out about 3 months ago, it became painful and not in the erotic sense. It is perfectly healed, I already have colostrum being produced and everything is fine. After I have finished breast feeding I WILL be having my nipple re pierced.

Okay, yes you can breast feed with nipple rings, and YES you need to take them out AND NO IT WONT LEAK TO MUCH MILK you have MANY wholes already in your nipples tht is how the milk comes out and a nipple ring is threw side to side or up and down not IN SIDE the nipple so you are fine the baby will not choke on milk he sucks as he needs to and it slowly drips when hes at rest. BUT YOU CAN WEAR THE RINGS WHNE YOUR DONE BREAST FEEDING hey thats what makes a MILK

I too have my nipples pierced..make that HAD. I took them out when I found out I was pregnant (I was 11 weeks already) at the urging of my nurse practitioner. She told me the main worry is scar tissue blocking the duct. I'm 26 weeks pregnant now and I've noticed a little lactation so I think I'll be alright. They say to remove them as soon as you know you're pregnant, but it won't cause milk to come out the holes (or so I'm told) and it's not going to cause a choking hazard. It shouldn't cause any problems as long as you have a healthy healing process.. I honestly never thought about it until I was pregnant, and I have to admit I cried when I took them out. I was devastated.

Milk has certain holes it comes out of, piercings will not cause more milk to come out of, unless it happens to bypass one of the ducts to the milk glands. Some babies are going to choke on milk no matter what, depends on how much you produce, your letdown and your babies swallow as well as gag reflex.
Nursing will be just the same, but yeah, like you said, the rings are a choke hazard ;-)

I took my piercings out while I was pregnant. I am sucessfully breast feeding my daughter (9 weeks) with no problems at all. You can do it. The holes might not close up completly though. The milk does kinda leak out of where the piercings were.
I had no problems with it and we are doing quite well with the breast feeding.

While I have no piercings, I would venture to suggest taking them out when you become pregnant. Your body changes so much when you are pregnant. I would wonder if it would pose a choking factor to the baby. Next time you go in for a check up with the gyno, you could always ask. happy New Year!

If worst comes to worst, you could always pump it and bottle feed your baby the breast milk.
I'm sorry you've gotten so many ignorant answers from people who don't appreciate piercings. It's unfortunate some people are so closed minded that they can't even see past a piercing that the general public probably doesn't even see.

I had a friend who had her nipples pierced and her doctor advised her to take them out if she was going to breastfeed. Not only can it cause problems with milk flow, but imagine the damage it could do to the baby's mouth. Not to mention the risk of it coming loose and the child swallowing it.

Well, I have no idea if it is going to effect the flow or production of milk, but certainly I would recommend not to keep any jwellary dusing the qhole tenure of breast feeding. This for baby's sake.
If a mother doesn't care about her baby's health, then god bless the child.
