Not very long. We had a cockatiel for over 20 years; it died about 3 years ago. He said several different words and barked liked the neighbor's dog. It didn't take long for him to pick up the words he said all the time.

I don,t imtend to offend you but a cockatiel is not a parrot..and they do talk I have one that talks...he learned to talk because I have a parrot also and he talks all the time and my cocatiel copy,s him so now he talks....Also if you want your cockatiel to talk Im almost certain it has to be a male....

It all depends on you!! If you spend alot of time with them, working with them, then it's just a matter of how long it takes them to learn. You just need to have alot of "patience" being repetitive. got the picture? see.... it didn't take you that long to learn? did it?
