I look for meat with the AHA seal - meat that is raised under humane conditions - and/or organic meat and milk. I buy hormone free eggs from "cage free" chickens. Consider buying meat and eggs from small, local farms, preferably farms that you might be able to visit yourself to see how the animals are raised. If you buy from local farms, you remove the transporting issue, and small family farms are less likely to use the same techniques as "factory farms". If you live where the ordinance allows you to have chickens, you could raise your own chickens for eggs - that way you know they're cruelty-free eggs.

I have done a lot of research into animal husbandry, animal rights etc, as i am studying applied animal technology. And yes i completely agree with you. Finding out what really goes on behind the scenes is what led me to become a vegetarian and ultimately choose an animal related carreer.
I have learned however that preaching and trying to force vegetarianism does not get the desired results. People are ignorant, and happily and willingly so.
Why dont the people who read this take a step, a chance if u may, and do some research on the web. You wil find some information that you cannot ignore.
Try this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxvCjNXyIHc
Watch it, for the animals, then make your own decision.
I do not support anything that harms animals, i stay away from meat and all animal by-products of slaughtering. Most of us dont even know what goes into our food these days
gelatine- boiled animal bones and tendons, found in marshmallows, sweets, joghurt.
Rennet, animal intestinal juice -found in cheese
Just do some research guys, you'll be proud of urself if u make a change, no matter how small.

Oviously you didn't see the spell check nor use it. My neighbor worked in a slaughter house some years ago and he said that is not the way animals were slaughtered. A spike axe is used to start with, which kills them instantly. I won't go into the rest of the details since how they do it is very gross to most readers. The way its done is quite humane. They are not hung by their legs from the roof either. I know that drugs are used to enhance the growth of animals, including antibiotics. Many people are allergic to these antibiotics and can have an allergic reaction when they eat the meats. You probably have no clue as to how a chicken is slaughtered either. I lived on a chicken farm growing up and we chopped their heads of and they'd run around til they died. And yes, I grw up in the country where many things are done different. We dodn't got to the store to buy out meat you raised and killed it.

Originally, even the animals ate plants ...
"Meat :
- Flesh as Food. ...
"God told Noah after the Flood that, along with vegetation, he could use for food every moving animal. (Ge 9:3, 4) But under the Law, the Israelites were restricted to eating what were defined as clean animals. (These are listed in Leviticus 11, and Deuteronomy 14.) The common people did not ordinarily eat much meat. But occasionally a goat or a lamb would be slaughtered for a communion sacrifice or in honor of a guest. (Le 3:6, 7, 12; 2Sa 12:4; Lu 15:29, 30) Among the more well-to-do, beef cattle were slaughtered. (Ge 18:7; Pr 15:17; Lu 15:23) Some of the game animals, such as the stag, gazelle, roebuck, wild goat, antelope, wild bull, and chamois, were eaten, and the meat was roasted or boiled. (Ge 25:28; De 12:15; 14:4, 5) The eating of blood was strictly forbidden, as was the eating of fat.—Le 7:25-27.
"Fowl were also eaten. The Israelites were miraculously furnished with quail in the wilderness. (Nu 11:31-33) Pigeons, turtledoves, partridge, and sparrows were among the clean fowl. (1Sa 26:20; Mt 10:29) Additionally, eggs were an item of food.—Isa 10:14; Lu 11:11, 12."
Even when humans were eventually allowed to eat flesh, they were to be humane ...
"Mercy :
- Merciful Treatment of Animals.
Proverbs 12:10 says: “The righteous one is caring for the soul of his domestic animal, but the mercies of the wicked ones are cruel.” Whereas the righteous person knows the needs of his animals and has a feeling for their welfare, the wicked person’s mercies are not stirred up by these needs. According to the selfish, unfeeling principles of the world, the treatment of one’s animals is based only on what benefit one might gain from them. What the wicked person would consider adequate care might actually be cruel treatment. (Contrast Ge 33:12-14.) The righteous person’s concern for his animals finds precedent in God’s own care for them as part of his creation. (Compare Ex 20:10; De 25:4; 22:4, 6, 7; 11:15; Ps 104:14, 27; Jon 4:11.)"
God fully intends & has definate plans to put things back the way he originally intended for things to be. He both Can & Will do so. I am a Big 'animal lover', & was SO relieved to learn what God's purpose is for the earth & all on it! Please, see if you aren't, also ...

Honestly I aggree with you. I think it is completly wrong what happens to animals at the slaughter house, but I do know that they are not awake when they slit them. They first put them to sleep by shocking them with electrical currents, which I still find very desturbing, but better then being awake. And I can't immagine what kind of person can actually sit there and slit the troat of a cow or anyother animal for that matter. Its sickning and cruel.
I also hate that they have meat that they sell from baby cows. I cant think of the name, but what they do is confine them in a small area where they can't move around and where they are misserable at and then kill them at a young age all so people can have "tender" meat. It just sickens me.
A lot of cows who are used for milk are confined in small areas and milked by matchines. I buy milk from pasture cows, where I know that they are let out to graze on grass and to run freely and live a happy life.
It is true that people eat meat all the time and never once think about the animal that had to suffer so they could eat a "good" meal.

Try not to pay too much attention to the PETA propaganda. I used to work in the meat processing business. Its not pretty but its not a torture chamber either. They do what the must do to keep the prices down so we can afford meat. As for the drugs, I personally think that is why so many 12 year olds look like we did at 20. Its just not feasible for everyone to raise their own livestock so these farms are necessary. There are a lot of people out there to feed.

I think it is really really sad that they are treated that way. I don't know what to do about it, and I'm not a vegatarian. But I do not like how they are treated at all. Does that make me a hipocrit? I dont know. But I did see some cow farms in California, along I-5 and I couldn't beilve my eyes. It was terrible. I do think the animals should at least have a good life, while they are here. I wish I could be a vegatarian, but there is no way that is possible, I love meat too much.

I completely agree with you, but it's become a necessity.
Honestly, think of the time it'd take for a humane kill and for a food animal to grow to "Ripe" size humanely?
People would starve. We'd plow through our current population in no time.
I'm not condoning it, I'm saying it's become a necessary evil in today's society. Supply and Demand. Companies have to supply what people want.

Never eat meat unless you know where you are getting it from. It is sad about the conditions of these animals and there should be a law against inhumane killing of any animls.
