I agree with LSN. I love the name Patrick, but not so sure on Patch. Patches is a very common name for pet animals. However, it depends on the person. I think if you use Patrick you should wait and see if it feels natural to call him Patch and if he accepts it. I don't think you can plan nicknames -- they are personal and don't fit everyone. Sometimes the oddest nicknames do fit. But I think those are almost always given by peers, not parents.

Patch sounds like a name for a dog with a patch of black or a calico cat. Sorry, doesn't seem appropriate for a child.

Awful..................Call him Patrick and if that name is too long for you then call him some other name instead of Patrick.
John is a nice name and I don't think it can be butchered by cutting it short. There are other names .

what you MUST remember when naming a child is "are they goin to get stick at school for this?" and sorry but the answer to that is yes if you saddle him with a name like patch, its better suited to a dog hunny
