well without knowing the type of vehicle I have a few questions for you.. Are your turn signals working on the rear? Are the brake lights working? If not then I would first check the bulb. Some lights use one element for many functions like stop and turn is one element. running lights is another.. all in the same bulb.. Now on some of the newer cars these functions are spread out over several bulbs. If the bulbs are ok then check all the fuses. If those are ok, then I would be looking at any connectors in the wiring harness to the taillights for damage or looseness. If it comes down to it just run a new wire from your switch or check with a professional shop.

Those wires you dropped could have blown a fuse if they touched each other when the lamp assembly fell off. Japanese cars use a relay and a controller, a module located in the trunk to supply running light power to run the lamps. Locate all your fuse box locations and recheck the fuses. If it still doesn't work, get the factory service and electrical manual or just ask a Toyota mechanic. It is a very common problem.

depending on the type of car it could be your headlight switch. The wiring for the rear lights go through the switch. Try wiggling the headlight switch and see if they come on. If they do you need a new switch.

I really don't know for sure...but either both lights on the rear are burnt out (not very likely) or there's some internal wiring problem. You might have to take it into the shop for an estimate and possibly a fix, which could be time- and money-consuming--sorry you're having car troubles.

If more than one light isn't working, it could be a fuse, or just the bulbs

Could be that the bulbs are burned out or something is loose in the wiring.

Possibly a blown fuse, although they are usually independently fused.
