An addiction is usually caused by a want to achieve something. The want is continously to be unreachable, so the addict always do various thing to get it.

An addict is a frustrated person.

To cure an addict, one need to find:

- the want that is continously to be unreachable

- a way to fulfill the want or dealing with it

But one can't cure an addiction if there's no addiction to begin with.

You need to see if it's an addiction or just something that it is liked.

Convince him that he's wasting his life. It's a video game, it's a waste of time and money. Get all of his friends and do stuff without him, like see a movie or anything outside. Then he'll feel left out, and then he'll be playing less.

Or you could just stick with the good old fashioned intervention.

Get him into something really interesting and very sophisticated.

MMORPGs fulfill a boredom vacuum in someone's life. That person doesn't just need to start working for a more important goal, but needs to find something that truly interests him in an intense sense. I don't wanna say he needs to get a life, but really, he needs to get a niche and relish in it more than just work at it.

Get them hooked on online strategy games or arcade shmups which have no subscription fee instead. But then they might just go back to WoW when they're done... argh I dunno... sex maybe...
