pokemon fire takes place 3 or more years in the past of emerald. that is, emerald takes place in the future of fire red.
in emerald, you need to beat the elite four before you attempt to trade with fire or leaf
in ruby and sapphire, you can trade with fire and leaf as soon as fire/leaf is able to trade with you. you don't need to beat the elite four
in fire and leaf, you need to beat the elite four, AND find the ruby and the sapphire to make the time machine that is on island one before you can trade to ruby, sapphire, or emerald
if you trade a pidgey on fire red with an emerald's tailow, the fire red game will trade with the emerald. after the trade, fire red will have the tailow, and emerald will have the pidgey

I am not to sure but I think you can since some of the Pokemon's are still needed from the older version for example that pidgey your missing, you will probably have to get it from the red or blue version. However, you can only trade certain Pokemon's that are in that game since it won't let you trade new ones into the old games. Tailow wont be accepted into the old one so you will have to find another pokemon that is in that red or blue version and no you don't have to finish the elite four either. If your still stuck try gamefaqs.com

Yes...to all of those things in the details....how? If u ever tried u should get a message saying something like "we're not ready to trade to far away regions as yet" on the fire red...u have to get the ruby and sapphire stones, which are items that can be held in the key items pouch in the bag, from team rocket in fire red and return them to celio at one island's pokemon center where you would see him fixing the network machine. This happens after you beat the elite 4. You need access to one island, which you get after you beat the elite 4. The sevii islands are where the shizz goes down that gives you the ability to trade with hoenn.

my son's in bed or he could tell you. He's talked about this before though and said he wanted either leaf green or fire red, because he could trade to emerald or ruby then.

like i said before, you must defeated the elite4 in both games, but for firered/leafgreen you have to complete the sevii island quest, that plus the defeat of the elite4 gives you the power to trade with emerald,as for emerald you just have to defeat the elite4 to get the national dex so you can get kanto and johto pokemon in your game
