If they are real thin, they are probably nematode worms--harmless, eat rotting plant matter and leftover food in the tank, seem to appear spontaneously, will often wiggle just above the water level, often live in any floating plants like duckweek. Baby fish will eat them. Just do regular tank cleanings and water changes and no problem. If the worms are fatter and kind of crawl on the sides/bottom of the tank, maybe have an arrow-looking head, they're planaria--again seemingly spontaneously appear when there's a lot of stuff to eat in the tank. These are harmless to fish but will multiply like crazy. Erythromycin will kill them (and not harm plants, fish or other inverts).

Being white in color I would say its possible that its an internal parasite from the fish....but most likely you would see them sticking out the rear of the fish. If it is a parasite then you need to get medication quickly. If its brownish then its poo like everyone else said.

There are also a few worms/feeder things it could be if you added new plants or feed your fish live food.

Trees and water do have their place. But I just can't come to say they are the most fantastic things in this world. I think sex fills that role better.
