There is electrical activity in the brain, and the more folds or "noodles" that a brain has, the more surface area it has and the more space for higher thoght. Animals with smooth brains exist mostly on inherited instict, and lab studies that bred mice with smooth brains found that the offspring died because some of the creases provided basic life functions. So, it is a matter of study, but electrical impulses among the nuerons and many folds in the grey matter seem to play a vital role. Also the pineal gland which is the "third eye" in the center of your forehead is thought to be the seat of consciousness.
