Here's how you stop and start the printer spooler in a Windows XP system.

1. click the Start button
2. click Run...
3. type "net start spooler" or "net stop spooler" (without the quotes) to either start or stop the printer spooler
4. click OK

You generally will do a stop command followed by a start command to help correct a printer malfunction.

Exactly as Shay2000.. says. Also, if you reboot the computer, the spooler is started automatically. If it is not started after a reboot, you may have a faulty printer driver installation.

Left click Printers and faxes over Start. Highlight your printer and left click file and Properties. Spooling can be turned off at this site.

Personally, I would uninstall then reinstall the printer (restarting between uninstall and reinstall).
