I am looking at buying a Catapillar D6-B dozer (which is a bit of equipment at a deceased estate), to clear some land but I have never driven one before. How hard can it be? Surely all I need to know is what levers do what, ie stop, go, left, right, clutch, blade up/down, rippers up/down. Everything else should be common sense, watch the gauges, keep it full of oil, gease, hydraulic fuild, diesel, water etc.

Modern dozers operate quite differently than older ones. You didn't say what model you were referring to, so I will assume the latter. Older cats had a main clutch lever on the left (long Lever coming out of the floor). Two steering clutch levers and two steering brake pedals. The throttle lever is usually on either side of the steering levers. The blade ops lever default on the right. With this type of steering system it is important to never use the steering brake without its adjoining clutch. If you do this much it will strip the lining off the brakes quickly. The main clutch must be pulled to engage and pushed to disengage and also to stop by pressing both steering brakes. If the machine is equipped with angle and tilt or four-way blade operation, it may have one or more levers for that.

ok im a mechanic but not a dozer operator
so consider the source

if the dozer is what i remember the two pedals on the floor are clutches and the to sterring handles are brakes

dont ever brake without clutching
remember
dont ever brake without clutching
professional drivers can brake a little without clutching
your not a professional driver
remember dont brake without clutching with the floor clutches

thats how us mechanics get by

now operating that beastie (and it is a beastie)
take little bites and dont bog down

let me repeat that take little bites and dont bog down

i made alot of money off dozers and graders and belly scrapers

if your inexperenced start out with little steps and dont be in a hurry

if your smart like you seem to be
i say you can do it too

some of the new ones don't have levers to steer, they use the foot pedals, most levers have instructions on them. there might be a manual on it. or see your dealer for one, :)
