Addiction, it has to be.
There is no positive to smoking unless you used it to kick the habit of crack or something.
The negatives are obvious. I smoke and I hate it. I have cut way, way down, I am smoking about, well it's almost 10:00 pm and I have had 2 all day! I won't smoke in my house or car or in public. So basically I just smoke on the front porch. I hope to cut down to ZERO cigs soon. I can still feel the urge, addiction, even cutting down from 10 a day to 2 a day!
By the way, after reading, I never smoked to look cool, my X did and somehow I picked it up, but was always able to quite when pregnant.

I used to party a lot, so smoking comes natural when your drinking alcohol and doing drugs. There are not many positives to smoking except it helps you digest your food and they taste good. Personally I like tobacco and smoking, but I always wanted to quit because doing things that are bad for you just does'nt make sense. One day I decided to quit and was'nt able to quit for 3 years after that. Now its been 3 years since I've smoked regularly. I never smoked to be cool, really it's just a good mix when you party and boy did I party a lot. Some people just have an addictive personality, like to do things in excess and get wasted, luckily I was able to defeat cigarettes.

Smoking relaxes people. That is why they/we smoke.
Young people smoke to look sophisticated and older. Cool.
Because it if forbidden or looked down upon, It has a mystique to it. Just like drinking.
The negative aspects are the addiction, and health problems caused by some types or excessive smoking. We all know the toll it takes.

For a break! A cigarette break, bathroom break, lunch break and a coffee break are among the few approved ways to get away from your job (be that secretary or mother, even). It gives you time to think when you are mad - and gets you outside all year round. It's nice to have something to do with your hands while in a bar.
And now for not good... not good... - oh yes - bad for health, makes you look old faster, smells bad, has you standing out in the freeeezzzing cold sometimes or scorching heat, expensive and the number 1 reason why i finally stopped smoking: I didn't want to pass on the legacy of females smoking to my little girls.
Peace!

They probably feel that smoking help them kill away boredom, helps them relax, rest their minds. For most teenagers, they might think that it's "cool", or it's a trend to follow with their friends.
Negative reasons why people smoke? I guess if smokers think that there are any negative impacts they will face if they smoke, then they will probably not want to smoke in the first place.
But smoking really harms your health and plus, a packet of cigar is really expensive. I could instead use the money to buy a packet of cigar to get myself a meal for lunch.

well, its certainly not because its healthy for u. lol. People start smoking cause they think its cool, they see it on TV, there parents/family members smoke, friends smoke, a role model smokes, etc. However, once u start its not all that easy to stop becuase u get addicted, even on the first try. I mean it is possible to stop, just hard to.

I think a lot of people start smoking when they are young. Peer pressure plays a big part with the stress of wanting to be cool etc. The nicotine in a cigarette is a drug and it's addictive so once you start it's hard to quit.

I am a smoker. When I started, I thought it was cool. There was not the information out there like it is now. I now know that I am a drug addict. The tobacco companies lied to the public about the effects of tobacco on humans. Please forgive us for smoking, we can not help it. Drug addicts get more help than we do, they just say, put them down and it is not that easy. If we were treated like an alcoholic or drug addict, most of us could get help. But society treats us like we have lepers disease.

Well, I started smoking because I thought people would think I was tough. I got picked on my whole life. So, I started dressing rough, acting rough, smoking and punching people lights out when they ticked me off. I'm pretty big and quite strong as far as women go. I kicked several guys behinds in my day. I think there's one guy out there walking around who still, to this day, has my finger prints around his neck. He ticked me off so I grabbed him around the throat and picked him up. He never messed with me again. I thought the smoking made me look tougher.
Of course, once I started then I got addicted and couldn't get away from it.

People smoke because they don't care about the medical reports and feel they are immune. People smoke because they don't care about their health and are committing slow suicide. People smoke because they are selfish and careless. People smoke because they are weak and easily influenced. People smoke because they can although it serves no purpose and kills without fail. I knew an older man who had smoked since he was a teenager. This man was so messed up that he was smoking with his oxygen tubes up his nose and tank at his side! He's dead now. Enough said.
