Your question as asked is quite difficult to answer, and I'm afraid I'm no music theorist. However a step in the right direction would be to look in Shape Note Hymnody, which assigned a shape to each of the notes as a mnemonic for learning.

The shapes first appeared in a book called "The Easy Instructor" and were used primarily by the church to improve the quality of choirs.

Shape notes have had a lasting impact on almost all musical genres.
