If you have done some computer troubleshooting and repair yourself, you can directly transfer data from the old hard disk to the new hard disk . Connect the old hard disk to the computer with the new drive with the secondary IDE cable. Set the jumpers , so that the new drive is configured as the master and the old drive is set as the slave. When you switch on the computer, you can directly transfer data between the 2 drives, using the copy command. More details at http://fixit.in/transferdata.html

You can definetly get your files back if your harddrive isnt fried. You can open up your old PC, pull out the harddrive, and attach it to your new PC, to the second port on ur IDE cable. You should do this when the computer is off. Then turn it on, and the computer will see your new drive. You will not be able to copy programs, but you will be able to get whatever data you want.

Install the old hard drive into the new pc with the jumper settings on "slave" on the old drive, and "master:" on the new drive, this should allow you to access any files on the old drive. An alternate would be to set jumpers on both drives to "cable select"

You have to take the hard drive out of the old computer and connect it up as a secondary master. But this will depend on if the hard is compatible (IDE or SATA).
The simpler method would be to purchase a USB IDE adapter from www.govconnection.com part number 4877141. This adapter only works with IDE and not SATA.
With either method you still have to remove the old hard disk from the case.

No and no. The new PC has to have new operating software. The exception is that you can clone your old hard drive contents to a new hard drive, but only within the same machine.

Just move the old drive to the new computer with a it's fresh system on it and use the old drive as a reference drive. With that scenario, you'll be able to back-up and store files to it.
