Well my mom doesn't really play much video games but here are my families favorites: they mostly like nintendo characters:

Dad: Donkey Kong
Mom: Peach
Older Brother: Dry Bones

My brothers are the only people in my family that play games anymore and my mom and dad never had a favourite character.
My one brother plays mainly RPGS and sports stuff along that line and my other brother only really plays sports. So I would guess my one brother that plays sports favourite character would be the one girl from SSX 3 the none English girl do not know her name.
I play Rpgs , only a few sport games like SSX 1 2 and 3. Some first person shooters , Adventure games like zelda and mario plus many others. Online games like diablo2 , runescape and final fantasy 11. I also play games like Command and conquer , galactic Civilizations 2 , Age of mythology , and other games along that line. I also like resident evil series and armored core series plus lots of other games.
My favorite character is simple Leon Scott Kennedy from RE2 and RE4. But Cloud from FF7 , Titus from FF10 , and there is an other character I like too but I forget. I like jill from RE1 and RE3 but there is someone I am forgetting. Thats it I like samus from Super Metroid.
