It's tradition. X and Y are used primarily for variables in equations. M and and the surrounding letters are used as coefficients. B and the surrounding letters are used as constants. There are no real rules saying it has to be this way. It just helps to have an idea of what these variable variables might mean when looking at a new equation or formula. K is also used as a constant because of the sound of "k". K for constant. C is used for constants so much that someone thought another letter would be useful.

No particular reason. Every letter of the Germanic alphabet and Greek has been used over and over to represent symbols in mathmatics and physics. We need some new symbols.

No one knows for sure -- however it is thought that the 'm' comes from the word "modulus." The word modulus is used to indicate teh sensitivity of a function to changes in the inputs. Thus is 'x' changes by one, the modulus tells us that 'y' will change by the modulus.
