There could be a couple of reasons: too humid or too much applied. How long have you been waiting for it to dry? If you put it on too heavily it may take quite awhile to harden up and dry. If it is very humid, the same may apply.

I had the same problem in Hawaii, polyurathane is a thin varnish and should dry fast, unless its an old can. If, the can is old, the mixture would slow the varnish drying process. I would return the product, and the next can you purchase check the expiration date.

The weather, old varnish or wet wood will cause your problem. Try heating the room over night.

Nancy W had good questions, please answer them for us to help you better.
I had a bad batch of varnish once. It didn't dry after several days. Other people had the same problem with that batch. Had to remove it and start over. Quite a chore.

You've given very little information about it. As a guess, you may have put it on to heavy, the humidity and wet weather.Moisture in the wood, these are only a few of the reasons.
