MR. Hockey Gordie Howe. All the above were incredible players that brought a different level to the game but looking back Mr. Hockey did some amazing things during the Original 6 era and although 99 & 66 were incredible scorers they got to do it against a lot more teams (that means less overall talent). Howe had to do it against 5 other teams that all knew his game very well. Consider some of these records : 29 All-Star appearances (a record that will never be threatened), he led his team to the championship finals (NHL &WHL teams) 15 out of his 32 seasons, he won 6 Stanley Cups, 7 time league MVP and most incredible of all he played 32 seasons between the NHL and WHL. That is the most amazing record of all, remember his hands were just as gifted to administer a beating to an opponent as they were to score (hence the Gordie Howe hat trick, goal, assist & fight). Nobody has come close to matching that kind of toughness and scoring ability and it is likely nobody ever will.

All kidding aside it's a matter of personal choice. However an argument could be made that any of the following are the greatest.
Wayne Gretzky, All time leader in many facets and great sportsman.
Mario Lemieux, Career cut short, who knows if he could have beaten Gretz.
Bobby Orr, Anther career cut much too short.
Gordie Howe, Mr.Hockey/Elbows embodied a complete game toughness as well as skill.
Martin Brodeur, Great goaltender, might be an all time leader when he retires, but still active.
Patrick Roy, Mr.Ego, Goaltending's alll time leader to date, but mostly for his answer to JR "I can't really heard what Jeremy says because I got my two Stanley Cup rings plug in my ears"
Rocket Richard, first 50 man, most intense player to ever play.
Of course these are just the best of the NHL, Tretiak, Kharlamov, Fetisov and all the greats of the CCCP era weren't there to compete.

Had Super Mario been healthy for most of is career and played as long as Gretzky he would have had very similar numbers.
Gretzky made the rest of the NHL look silly for over a decade in his prime years. His 92 goal in 80 games was amazing. And they way he shattered Howe's record in so many less games leaves no doubt he was the greatest.
