A signature is something that you want Yahoo (or whatever other mail service you're using) to put at the end of every single one of your email messages.

Some people just end their emails with "Thank you, [Their name]" and they don't want to type that every single time. So they go into their options menu and type that into their signature settings (Options->Mail->Management->Signature for Yahoo). Other people like to put the address to their own website there so everyone that they send an email to automatically gets that link at the end of the email message. Other people just like to put quotes.

That check box you saw is what puts that signature at the end of your email. All you have to do is check it and then you don't have to type out whatever is in your signature. If you want, you can even go into signature options and set it to automatically check that box every single time.

That's in cases where they can leave the mail right there. See, some kinds of mail (like certified mail) require you to sign your name upon receiving it, in order to prove that someone actually did receive it.

But in some cases, if you receive a "we tried to deliver, but..." type of note from the post office, you can sign the form and have them just leave it right there. It's a little convenience, as they'll only try so many times.
