I think it's just another excuse to give people with cushy federal jobs a day off. I mean no disrespect to Mr. Ford, but honestly... how many people are really going to using the day as "remembrance"? Gimme a break. I just think it's a bit over the top. No USPS or federal services for three days in a row? Unnecessary. My .02

oooh nooo, I'm getting thumbs down votes! booo hooo...

I think some of you don't understand that just because I think the motives for a federal shutdown day are ill-conceived, it doesn't mean I don't have respect for Mr. Ford. It has nothing to do with that. I'm just being honest.

We all know that no one but his family and close friends are truly mourning him. Other people just get a day to sleep in. That's fine, but call a spade a spade.

Actually lucee, it does indeed come out of our taxes. Not that that's why I think it's silly, but if you're going to try to point something out as arbitrary and ridiculous... at least make sure you know it's untrue first.

Yeah an extended vacation for those lucky federal workers. Not to disrespect Ford, who's really gonna take a moment of silence to remember Ford. Even if you did, you can do it for a few minutes like during lunch or dinner.

Yeah, I totally agree. If they are going to close down the federal offices it sure would be nice if they would close down the schools and other work places so we can all "remember President Ford". But I'm mostly mad that I won't be getting my mail for days. I mean with a Sunday, then New Years and now this - I could be missing out on some valuable stuff (plus, I'm slightly addicted to checking the mail).

Oh, what the heck. It's kinda Kool!

Afterall, it's such a Great place to put the day.

Couldn't have worked out better for somebody. So at least that's a pretty large group of people who serve us everyday that won't be feeling as much stress for awhile.

It is too bad all of us aren't going to get that. Cause we could all really use being home tomorrow.

But all of those people are related to somebody. Like a daughter with the flu, that's gonna have her mother home with her. I wouldn't want to take something like that away.

We are all really connected, and if we began seeing that a break for one of us is really a break for all of us ( working together ), then none of us will lose what we get and we will all be happier.

All for one and one for all. Happy New Year!
Oh, it's also a beautiful thing to show respect for a President. I like you're Question!

Well, I guess someone has to close out the year with a rant about something, now it's because of a national day of mourning for a former president. What difference does it make to you if federal AND bank employees get paid an extra day? Does it come out of your tax refund?

I so appreciate the answer given by the person from China. They showed more respect than your squealing.

I am from the Peoples Republic of China.

I know that the late President Gerald Ford was an honorable and morally decent. His accomplishments are well known and he served the people of the United States faithfully.

It is only proper to mourn and honor such a great man.
God bless America and Mrs. Ford.
God bless all living beings!

It's called RESPECT for a former president and one fine gentleman. It will not hurt you to do without the federal offices for another day. Chill out and be glad we live in a country where people still pay homage to people who have served their fellow citizens in a meaningful way!!

You are so right. Some people are either just too politically correct or too staunchly old-fashioned to admit an obvious truth.
