Lake Superior State University on Sunday released its annual "List of Words and Phrases Banished from the Queen's English for Mis-Use, Over-Use and General Uselessness." examples:
COMBINED CELEBRITEY NAMES such as "TomKat" or "Brangelina." One said, "It's so annoying, idiotic and so lame and pathetic that it's "lamethetic.'"
GONE/WENT MISSING -- "It makes 'missing' sound like a place you can visit, such as the Poconos. Is the person missing, or not? She went there but maybe she came back.
BOASTS -- See classified advertisements for houses, "master bedroom boasts his-and-her fireplaces -- never 'bathroom apologizes for cracked linoleum,' or 'kitchen laments pathetic placement of electrical outlets.'"
WE'RE PREGNANT -- Grounded for nine months.
"Were men feeling left out of the whole morning sickness/huge belly/labor experience? "I'm sure any woman who has given birth will tell you that 'WE' did not deliver the baby."
what overused words would YOU banish?

I would banish words like hate, poverty, hunger, war Aids, terrorism and injustice but to do away with such words we would have to do away with those things and people. And no one can do that but God in his own do time. Not even the most powerful nation in the world.

I would ban forever the "n" word and the "f" word. They lend nothing to a vocabulary.

My most detested phrase..."it's got..." Winston cigarettes has a lot to answer for. They started widespread use of this phrase in their television advertising back in the '50s.

The contraction is "it has got" which is redundant and repugnant.

Adding an "l" to the word "idea," meaning to say "idea" but actually saying "ideal."

Adding an "s" to the word "mine." Mine is singular. Adding an "s" implies that it is plural.

The word I would like to NEVER hear again....F**K.
I am really tired of the word "amazing." It's always said with this whiny voice ....let's KILL it! If these two words were banished forever, I would be grateful for a long, long time!

"You know wha time saying?"
"new-cue-ler"
"Ask your doctor if ......... is right for you."
"Cat got your tongue?"
"My main squeeze"
"You ain't just whistling Dixie"
"whatever"
"Been there done that"

Why don't we banish the words "hero", "gifted" and "challenged" for a month, since they seem to be the most over-used words in the English language these days?

The N word.

Any use is overuse, no matter who thinks they have rights to do so. Let's retire this puppy once and for all.
