It's attached to the boat and the bottom of the anchor wedges itself on the bottom....there are different kinds of anchors for different type of bottoms.

The most important part of the anchoring process is the scope of chain and line that one has set with the anchor. The anchor lone will not stop you from drifting. It has to be allowed to set into the bottom of the seabed. A rule of thumb is about 5 to 1, that means if the depth of the water is 10 meters you will need 50+ meters of chain and line. If you only have a short length of chain attached to you anchor then you will need more than 50 meters. If you only have chain then you can probably get away with less. Obviously, if you are only anchoring in a bay on a calm day for lunch say, then you can get away with less.If on the other hand you are anchoring overnight with fairly strong winds, you might want to increase your scope. The bottom material will also play a role, mud is great for holding, light sand less so. Rocks can be good, but you might foul your anchor and seaweed is generally a pain.

When the anchor is set out with enough line ( called scope) the anchor will be pulled back as the boat drifts back and will dig into the bottom.

By sheer weight usually. But many anchors 'dig' into the bottom when the boat drifts slightly.
Henceforth the hooks on the ends of many anchors.

Most anchors , if properly set, dig deeper into the bottom the harder they are pulled, like a fish hook in a fishes mouth.

the anchor hits the bottom of the ocean and weighs the boat down so it doesnt move forward.
