of the fish bowl and can't seem to swim down. On a goldfish website it said to give the goldfish shelled peas, which actually seemed to work for a while. Now nothing seems to work, and believe it or not, I am attached to my little goldfish. Any suggestions? I am afraid that if he can't swim, he will die soon. Thanks!

Floating is most often caused by the fish eating dry food which
absorbs water from the digestive tract and causes digestive
problems of which floating is an indication. Over time this
will damage the swim bladder and the fish will be unable to
'hover' in the water (at this point the fish is called a sinker).
Once a fish becomes a sinker it will be one for life. Fish with
this condition my live for several years if provided with a good
(non dry) diet.

As Jennie says, goldfish do not belong in a fish bowl, they're little poop machines, it'd be much like you swimming in a cess pool unless you give partial water changes every day. Gold fish like cooler water that's flowing strongly (think pond with a waterfall) A goldfish can live for over 10 years if you give it proper care like that, if you keep it in a fish bowl, expect it to last not too much longer unless you move it to a tank with a filter.

If your goldfish is in a bowl with no filtration that is not good he'll need a water change every day. The water is usually to high in ammonia when this happens. A goldfish is supposed to have at a minimum of 10 gallons of water because they are dirty fish.

Your fish has a swim bladder problem. It is Caused by bacterial infection, incorrect diet, trapped gas and poor water quality. The best thing to do is improve water conditions doing 25% partial water change. Feed less dried foods, or pre-soak pellets and flakes so they don't swell the gut. Don't overfeed the fish also. Just feed it once or twice a day. You can also prevent causing stress like this to your fish by feeding it balanced diet food. I use Hikari goldfish food for my fish that you can get from petsmart. Here's the website:http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441777096&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302030130&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023693&bmUID=1167718645775&itemNo=12&Nao=12&Ntt=hikari&In=All&previousText=hikari&N=2

I heard about this condition but I cant remember the exact name. At any rate try to soak the flakes before you throw it in the bowl. I read before that it helps

My nannas did this and it was because she feed it too much. If this is not the case then take it to an aquarium store (specialises in all fish) and talk to them
