My brother told me that a person has to gross at least $3,000 dollars. Is that true? I was just wondering because I grossed a little more than $4,000 and would really like to file this year since I get to add my son also.

You can file tax returns if you made 0 dollars. If you made 4000 dollars and have a child you may qualify for earned income credit, which could produce a nice refund check for you.

No, you can file with $1 of income.

If you have a dependent child, you're more likely to be eligible for the Earned Income Credit, or will get a larger one than if you didn't have a child. You might get as much as $1300 or so, so it's definitely worth filing, even though with $4000 income you probably aren't required to.
