I think my dog is in heat I have been spotting blood on the floor.My question is...is she definitely in heat and can getting pregnant kill her since this would be her first heat.I want to make sure she gets all the right care just in case.We also have a male labrador.

We dont mind puppies and no the male lab is not fixed I think she's just going into heat cause she wont let wyett near her.

Most dogs come into season for the first time between 6 and 12 months, although some larger breeds delay until as late as 2 years.
Dogs bear their litters roughly 9 weeks after fertilization, although the length of gestation can vary from 56 to 72 days.

Also, a female dog, *****, will usually spend one week going into "heat"; one week in "heat", and one week accessible after the spotting stops. That means that one should keep their female confined in such a way so that NO male dogs are within access of her for 21 days +/- ...IF no puppies are desired at this time. Females go through heat twice per year usually...although there are some exceptions. You could go on and mark your 2007 calendar for another "heated" experience in June unless she has already mated with the lab.

Yes, she is in heat. I would not recommend breeding her the first heat. She is still growing. We have always been told it is better to breed the second heat. They are more mature and can handle the breeding. 6 years ago our Boxer male got a hold of our Boxer female at 9 months when she had her first heat(He chewed through a baby gate). It really hurt her and she yelped the entire time and i cryed the entire time. NOt an experience I want to go through again. She is ok and so were the puppies. She has had two more litters since then. Pregnancy takes a lot out of a female. I would wait until she has matured. This is usually the second heat or around 18mo. - 2 yrs. I have experienced this with my dog and if you don't want puppied keep them apart at all cost! My female delivered a litter of puppies and then started to have seizures. I was devestated...the puppies were to much for her I guess. I went ahead and had her spayed so that no more surprise puppies would come. The males will chew through a door to get to the female when it is here time. Definately call your vet and get her checked out. Female pets can also contract yeast infections just like woman. If you have a good relationship with the vet they will even let you post date a check till' your next pay period of need be. But whatever you do......proper care is imperitive! Then please be careful who you release the pups to. Some people mistreat pets by dog fighting them.

She is definately in heat. If she is very small getting pregnant from a labrador could be perilous. You should take precautions anyway so she doesn't get bred and get her spayed immediately after. Keep her isolated from the lab, it only takes a minute for her to get bred.

If you don't mind puppies then you may just get your wish. She most definitley can get pregnant and it won't kill her unless she has a complicated pregnancy. A heat cycle last about a total of 3 weeks. The first week going into heat, the second week bleeding and the last week going out of heat. I would get both pets spayed/neutered. It just makes for healthier pets. Doing this greatly reduces their risk of cancers.

Chances are she probably is in heat. Getting pregnant would not killher, but if you don't want puppies and your male dog is not fixed...i would keep the two of them away from eachother until she is not in heat anymore.

dont worry about her getting hurt or killed.....buy a puppy pad. you can get them at petsmart it looks like a pair of spanks that you put a sanitary pad in for girl dogs. also if you need to you can put the lab in another room if your not at home

Advice# 2 if your labrador is not fixed your screwed.
Advice # 3 your dog will not kill her if it is her first heat.

HIDE HER..BECAUSE MY DOG IS ON HIS WAY...KEEP HER IN AND SHE WILL BE FINE OK..AND AFTER THIS ARE NOW IF U CAN GET HER FIXED..OK
