Goldfish are all one species. They are simply different color and body variations of the same species of fish.
Koi on the other hand are a different species.

Yes and couldresult in badly deformed fish. You can tell when goldfish are ready to breed when the female of course gets plumper as she becomes ripe with eggs. Meanwhile, the male goldfish develops whitish bumps on his gill covers and the foreward edges of his pectoral fins.

they are the same species. But they are varieties and their colors and patterns won't breed true so you'll get lots of different looking fish.
