the distress signal came about because of the cock up with rescuing people from the titanic. it was then decreed worldwide that sos (and the morse code for it) would always be used. In english speaking society it is referred to as save our souls
However if your at a buffet party it could also mean stretch or starve!!

In international morse code~3 dots form the letter s and 3 dashes make the letter o. So sos became an easy way to remember the code~...---... sos~HELP!!
It can also mean "sh-t on a shingle" which my husband says they serve a lot of in the Navy, or use to anyway!!

But it's actually a common signal in danger time because in Morse Code, it's simply: ... _ _ _ ...
This was easy to type and recognize in an emergency.
